The Shanxi Provincial Museum has a vast collection of neolithic artifacts. So far, over 200 paleolithic and 500 neolithic sites have been unearthed in the province, plus over 500 tombs and other ancient ruins. Museum 2 is considered more important than Museum 1. It is the site of Chunyang Palace on the west side of May 1 Square. The palace itself was built between 1573 and 1619, and renovated in the Qing Dynasty. It contains 20 exhibition halls with ceramics, bronzes, carvings, lacquer ware, calligraphy, embroidery, books, and other documents unearthed throughout the province. There is also a huge coal museum.
